WELCOME...
In 2005, The Charlie Sears Foundation, a 501(c)3
non-profit corporation, was formed to keep hope alive for Charlie, his
family, and other families of police officers or firefighters faced with the diagnosis of brain cancer.
The foundation continued Charlie's legacy of love, humor
and courage by providing hope, support and financial
assistance to law enforcement officers and firefighters battling brain tumors.
Inspired by retired Los Angeles Police Detective, Charlie Sears, it was our mission to provide financial assistance, physician referral
and advocacy services to those law enforcement officers and firefighters
diagnosed with brain cancer. Since 2005, we provided financial
assistance and emotional support to six law enforcement officers and their
families. Following is a list of the
officers we had the honor of assisting:
- Officer Tito Gomez, California Highway Patrol (1962 – 2007)
- Sgt. John O’Neil, Los Angeles County Sheriff’s
Department (1962 – 2007)
- Deputy James Gilmartin, Los Angeles County Sheriff’s
Deparment (1964 – 2008)
- Detective Gina Meyer, San Bernardino County Sheriff’s
Department
- Officer Jeff Goodrich, Manhattan Beach Police
Department (1969 – 2010)
- Officer Abel Hernandez, Brea Police Department
Over the past year or so The Charlie Sears
Foundation has lacked the funding needed to continue with our services as was
originally planned. After much thought
and discussion with the Board of Directors, we have decided to dissolve our
organization.
It has been my great privilege to
have had a small part in providing some comfort to these officers and their
families. I have made lifelong friends
and have shared in the sorrows of those lost to this terrible disease. I am forever changed because of my
experiences with The Charlie Sears Foundation and its Board of Directors. I could not have asked for or imagined the
support I was shown throughout these past six years.
Finally, thank you to each and
every one of you that has supported our efforts over the years. I will forever treasure the moments shared
with each of you at our golf tournaments.
And I will always be grateful for your stories and memories of my Dad;
many of which I may have never known had you all not been a part of our
foundation.
Forever grateful,
Laura K. Miller, President & Founder
